Busy week: R5 motor bracket/3D designing and more….

A busy week of building, buying, designing etc….

1:
R5’s second new foot motor bracket frame, needed completing: just needs some finishing tweaks, and 3D printed brackets for the channel plate.

2:
Been discussing in group chat about next year’s Star Wars Celebration , attending droid numbers etc.

3:
Been designing up ‘control panels’ for a side project idea. See coming post.

4:
Whilst researching I came across a video about the origins of R2’s PSI lenses. So a search on eBay and I managed to get a bargain for £6.00 GBP. Its a vintage Weston Masters two, photographers light meter.

The lens is bubbled on one side, but i was surprised to see that the honeycomb part was multiple layers of punched/stamped pieces, that were then rivited together.

R2-D2’s data port LED’s components [3D printed]

So over on the astromech.net forum, I came across a post about the ‘light bar’ electronics components and that they were becoming harder to source. These can be seen in picture below.

R2-D2’s dataport, image from directory
Thought I’d have a go at searching to help out. Found the original supplier info and the date sheet pdf for the component(s). So decided to draw one up in CAD. Turned out ok.

Light bar (housing)

I found some opaque plastic and cut it to fit. I then drilled a hole in the back and fed an led in. It was a bit bright (as it was a crystal clear one) but it gives an idea of what it would look like.

Light bar with LED illuminated

I’ve also uploaded three versions to my Thingiverse page:

Single with separate lens. www.thingiverse.com/thing:4718965

Triple with separate lens. www.thingiverse.com/thing:4719976

Triple with lens combined (if printing in opaque filament and then painting the sides)

Christmas Card 2019 - Lee Towersey

Received this cool Christmas card from Lee. As I wasn’t able to attend the group’s Xmas event on Saturday, he kindly popped it in the post.

The card was designed by Topps artist, Marsha Parkins and features a number of droids Lee has worked with over the last few years on the films.
The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, Solo a Star Wars story to name drop just three lol.

Marsha has a few socials, Facebook etc, but checkout her gallery over on Deviant Art:

Littlebits - Star Wars Droid Inventor Kit - pt 8 (2019)

So the extra tinkering I thought would help with the lid fitting better, radius'd edge, didn't and made the gap bigger. The idea for the lip is just to locate it centrally for gluing to the head. So I went back to alter the lip edge a bit more, I'll test print it this week.

This is the Littlebits droid in it's R2-D2 guise.

Whilst I was at it, I re-positioned the antenna to face forward, it was just a little thing but it was bugging me lol. I also added a version with a 'bad motivator'.

Mini Droid get-together - 2nd July 2016

On Saturday 2nd July at a top secret location, the builders club had a pre-celebration droid get together. This mostly involved us just driving the droids around and chatting lol, but some new builds were shown off and updates & testing were done also.

Is always good to meet up with new builders & old ones too. I've not been able to attend as many of these as i would like, due to family commitments.

Some pics of the day.

Event report on the Sci-Fi Fest: (23rd Nov 2013) @ FLEET AIR ARM museum

My usual transport (my car) had been commandeered for the day so had to use the sub-standard cargo bay transport [don't tell the wife I called her car small :D]. Nearly two hours trying to fit R5 into the cargo bay of it! Eventually I had to resort to removing ALL his feet, not a big deal, only three bolts in total, as no electric motors to disconnect......yet. Then strap him in good and tight.
R5-D4

Just over an hours drive from Bristol & Yeovilton on a very cold, but Sunny morning.

Arrived and then began the R5 rebuild. Here I also meet up with fellow builder Giles & Artoojayzero. And my then unceremonious dragging him over not very smooth car park tarmac. Did a two trip journey, second was for R5's dome.

The event was organised by The Charity Sci-Fi Group.

Once inside we meet up with Mark and his 'collection' of droids! Below are links to his pages!
Podpadstudios these include a few people my recognise, and also introducing his latest creation....... Steam Punk Droid!

We set up and were off. As R5 was safley on display, I helped out with assisting Giles with his droid. Mark & Giles got loads of attention from the kids as well as parents lol. R5 also had his fair share of comments and questions and also the QR codes for our respective sites came in handy. The MK Garrison & The Southern Troopers group were also in attendance and were awesome! loads of photos taken :)

Before you knew it the day was done and it was packing up time. This was my first official event with R5....and his dome....but again, had a gerat time and managed to remember some names to put with faces. Well heres some of the photos taken.
