R2-D2 Funko Pop 3D model : Etsy

January 2024
With everything going on I didn’t get round to uploading the file for R2 in his three legged driving mode.

This dome was my own work, free hand design with better, more accurate details than the original Funko modelled R2.

Now you’ll be able to recreate the iconic movie scene with R5 & R2 on the Lars Homestead.

March 2024:
This was the plan, but have decided to close my Etsy shop the end of the month.

UPDATE:

stl file now available for FREE here.

JUMBO Funko R5 - Part 2

December 18th continued:

Thursday after work, I set up the Tevo printer to print off the upper body section, hopefully from the point it stopped on Sunday.

I also re-setup my action cam to keep an eye on the printer.

Friday morning:
The upper part printed well, and by the looks of it may only of been a layer or two out.
After cleaning the print supports off, I glued the two halves together.

Next up was the dome, got home and after having some temperature issues with the filament, eventually got it printing…….only to realise that the file wasn’t the extra large version 😩😩😩. So won’t be doing any printing this weekend 😔😔😔.

Once the above had been rectified, printing began.

The filament is illumines lol as can be seen in the picture above. Yes, it’s R5’s dome.

And here are some assembled pictures of it. The dome isn’t glued on, there’s a lip that sits in the neck of the body.

To be painted……probably yes.

JUMBO Funko R5 - Part 1

 A week ago I had to drop my daughter off at a dance lesson, with an hour to kill I had a walk around the local shops. Mostly charity ones, these always have hidden items lol. To my amazement there was a FULL roll of filament for £5 UK pounds!

Then during the week, a chat with Mike about upcoming events and future build projects, I had the idea for this next print.

So i opened up Cura and swapped the printer view from the S5 to my Tevo print bed. I placed my 3 leg Funko R5 on it and played with the scaling. I was able to bump it up to 250% and it would just fit. Print time was about a day…..but I knew that wouldn’t be the case lol.

Thursday evening I set the printer going. But the filament wasn’t happy?? After a few starts, and even checking the bed height, I gave it a rest for the night.
Friday morning, before leaving for work, I had another go. This time I noticed that this filament required a higher temperature 😳😳😳 so after adjusting, things looked promising.

Here’s the progress over the few days:

Everything was going smoothly.

Woke up Sunday morning and found this…..

The printer was still going but printing in thin air 😩. The filament had tangled!

Nothing I can do about it till Monday when back in work. I’ll then have to slice the file to be able to print the rest of it.

Monday:
Decided to play around with the files, modified them to reduce excess material and filled in gaps that weren’t really visible on a 1:1 scale lol.

I then made a modified version, I removed the dome, and made it a push on fit (that can be glued on). This also will make the rest of the body print quicker and with less support material required.

All these updates will go into the other droid designs.

So now I have two separate files to print over the week/weekend.

This will be in the second part of this post.

R5-D4 Funko Pop inspired 3D model

Each week I usually focus on just one particular project.

Recently though, I’ve been working on a few.
  • LED’s light strip, see workbench upgrade post, coming soon……
  • A ‘vintage car’ glovebox 3D printable, stronger version than the original cardboard one
  • And something that I’ve wanted to do since the ‘original’ 3 legged R2-D2 concept Funko Pop came out….. Model R5 as a 3 legged version.

Funko beat me to it with their twin set of R5 & R2 at Celebration Europe earlier this year 2023.

My Pop is stored away, so this version is a modified version of my own R5 that I modelled years ago, for all the R5’s variants Funko haven’t produced, with its own unique angled stance and new 3rd centre leg, with single ankle cylinder, just as the 1977 R5 should be. This is now available for download in my Etsy shop.

The body to leg (shoulder) mounting location was modified to a suitable angle. The leg ends also had to be modified to accept the outer feet. Finally, the centre legs ankle and cylinder had to be modified.
Specifically for individual part printing.

But my first test print was a fully assembled model version, see above Cura printing image.
First test printed really well, though I have made some adjustments to the rear panel gaps, corrected a few other little things.

Next idea was to produce a detail drawing showing the views of the 3D model. I was thinking about uploading these to my Etsy page as an additional downloadable purchase…..

May even do a special offer for the first 5 downloads of the 3D file(s) that the print is  included 👍🏽.

I still haven’t done an R2 style dome yet, but it’s  on my to do list.
I do have the R4 dome as well as the R5 special style dome of R5-PHT from Solo a Star Wars story.

So I’ll make versions of these too......

Dashboard copilot: R5-D4 Funko Pop

March 2022
Wanted to do this for a while, but didn’t want to actually cut up a Funko, so I used my original bobble head design and found a suitable spring.

This was the original idea, for him to have screws pass up through the removable grill, but I didn’t want to have holes in it (resale of car). So just behind him in the picture is a removable socket that would be used for an alarm module. I got the dimensions for it and drew up and 3D printed a plug to stick onto the bottom of R5’s base panel. That way he can be plugged in.

May 2022
R5 has been sat waiting for me to order some red paint lol. He was sprayed white ages ago. Now he’s completed I can now place him in the car 😎👍🏽
You may notice his antenna is missing…..it broke off, so version two will be coming soon lol.

And here’s a #shorts video on YouTube,

R5-D4 Carbone frozen 3D stl files on Etsy

Above image shows, finished model with additional silver coloured PVA glue for the frozen carbonite

After a long thought process, I've decided to make my models available via my Etsy  page. I don't know how many of the Thingiverse downloads are actual ones or just the bots, sharing the links?? So it's now over on my page.

R5-D4 Carbon Frozen progress

November:

I had seen someone add paint to a mixture of PVA glue, this worked great!!
Perhaps it was the paint I used, but it made the glue lumpy, which added to the textured effect. I mixed up a few batches to not waste, but also to see if it would actually dry 😄.

…..which it eventually did, took a bit longer though.

Project paused till December:
I dug out this project and checked that the glue had now fully dried, before I applied the same paint over the exposed areas.
It just needs a few more coats.

Funko pop R5-D4 astromech in Carbonite!

3D printing in progress....

9hrs 40mins to print.
No supports underneath as didn’t want to waste filament, see below for underside pictures.

And here's the finished
printed R5 in carbonite.

Swapped R5's base plate over to
properly stand this twin, in carbonite

Here’s the 'behind the scenes', underside, showing the unsupported area’s. Not to bad considering, would slowing down to allow more cooling of helped, maybe, but I’ll be drawing up and printing off a back panel to cover this all anyway.

I trimmed off the excess and then used my soldering iron to bond the ends etc.

Picture below is the back panel file I've printed off, I’ve now upload these files to my Thingiverse Etsy page HERE. [these will be available later today].

** A few idea's.....how about translucent print and then after painting, install pulsing red LED's to simulate the de-carbon freezing process.

OR..... simply install micro LED's or fibre optic's into the side control panels, just like in the film! **

Next up is PVA glue and spraying and weathering.....

Funko pop astromech on ice.......Carbonite!

 For those who can't paint or choose not to lol :D I thought I'd create these POP's as frozen in carbonite blocks. As I had just finished drawing up the R4 domed version, he was first into the carbon freezing chamber!

I found images of the Han Solo POP version and recreated as best as I could the side control panels.

I also made the bottom (when in vertical) flat and added location holes so it can be mounted on a stand.

I have now also add some screen accurate rollers for the bottom of the feet/foot shells. These can be seen in the last picture.

As the POP is hollow, I recessed the block, I may design up a back panel (if required).

And to add to this collection, I created R5 in carbonite as well.

And here you can see his feet rollers.

Funko R5 - Outer Foot file [upload]

 So for over a year, I thought the file for my outer foot had been uploaded to Thingiverse, and as nobody had asked about it, I would naturally assume that all is well with the world lol.

Till this morning, when I received an email from Scott, thanks Scott, asking about said file......

....due to the issues, Thinkgiverse uploads, the file hadn't uploaded.

So for all you Funko fans, the file HAS been uploaded [here] AND added to the original R5-D4 Funko files [here].

Thingiverse - search section and more

The other day on the Astromech.net forum, it was noted to me that some of my links were flagged up with the dreaded 404 error message screen :D

So I went though and checked them. Some had broken links, others had info missing that you needed to have in order to of published in the first place.....strange??? I then logged out and checked my files that way and they should be all there again.

One thing I did do was to add 'JamesF' to the 'tags'. As with most searches, it all depends on how you think people will search for a file. I thought it would be simpler to add my name 'JamesF' to the tags to make searching easier :D.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Next up is a list of 2021's interactions on my Thingiverse page. This was just interesting for me to see what people have been liking and downloading of my files. I'll be keeping track of these for 2021.
Thanks for reading.
Funko Pop Astromech 3D - Prusa [was Thingiverse] uploaded files
Eventually got around to uploading ALL the stl files for R5's Funko model.
Funko 3D printable R5-D4
  • The dome/body prints in two half's, front/rear.
  • The legs, only has one file, to be printed twice.
  • The same with the battery boxes & feet.
  • The hoses you will need to mirror print for opposite foot.
If you print one off, you can tag me on the astromech forum's or via my 'R5 Facebook' page or 'Instagram'. Here's the LINK to Prusa account page.
Update 2024: all files transfered to my Prusa account [still free stl files]
Funko Pop Astromech 3D - Finished printing update.
 The second half [rear] printed great and didn't require much clean-up. The support did come away for the antenna, but it still printed ok.
half sections together
half sections together
The above picture shows the two half's together....no, your eyes are not playing tricks on you lol, the centre line is angled. I thought the dome and body were all lined up on there plan's, but only the dome was. This isn't a problem though as the side dome rods help hide the join.....plus once painted etc. And the body join line will be hidden once the legs are attached.
And here is the almost finished model. Not glued, just propped up together.
Funko R5-D4 Astromech [3D printed]
I had to get stl versions created for two fellow builders who's droids were not produced by Funko. These will all go up on my Thingiverse page, once they have been printed and checked as OK.
I have also completed the battery box hoses to a more satisfactory (me) standard lol. I forget that once printed, the details that I agonizes over....don't really needed to be worried about.
A morning [5 hours worth] working on another dome not produced by Funko, so a bit or artistic licence has been taken :D. Again the body/dome will be one non-bobble head piece.
It's blue but not R2....??
The owner was very pleased and will be printing the full droid version soon.
Funko Pop Astromech 3D - Finally....almost finished
 So in my last Funko POP update, I mentioned a few new ideas to print off the parts and the time involved. I will admit that the printing times are something I don't enjoy lol.....especially when it's just development/testing prints.
Funko Astromech V2: head & body [non-bobble]
The works printer has been tied up since I got back into the office, frustrating, but hay, it is there's lol 😃. I did get to print the updated legs, feet and battery boxes, now with less inner's to print, saving on material and time. These only took about 4 hours to print and because they were separate's, I could print them in their best orientations. These came out great, though I would recommend upping the infill lol 😃 (think I had it on 10%). I've updated my Thingiverse page with these new 'hollow' parts.
Funko 3D printed parts
Funko POP astromech legs assembly
Next up was the body/dome print. This print will be for the NON-bobble head version I've been working on, as this will also be an option. I wasn't happy with the length of time it would take for a test print and if it didn't print ok or fail, it was a lot of filament to waste. So I half sectioned the model and printed the front half first. This saved on time/filament as hardly any support material would be needed.
It printed better than I hoped! Some parts on it didn't print 100%, scale was too small for the detail to be printed and these I have slightly modified for next time. The print time for this was over 8 hours, so left it to print overnight.
Half print - R5D4 Funko POP
And here's the first half printed off. You can see the details missing around the centre vents and the utility arms, more to do with the settings I believe.
Front half of Funko Astromech
I set the printer to print the rear half over night....
Rear half set up to be printed
It printed great, though the support did come loose for the antenna, but it still printed, so it actually looks like the original bent version lol.
........More updates to come including another dome...!
