The Mandalorian: R5-D4 trading Card '88': version No1

Managed to bag this bargin on eBay, from a UK seller.

Still on the lookout for the other versions, at a reasonable price, but unfortunately the others are in the USA so postage is an extortionate amount, in relation to the card itself, so will just have to settle for this one for now.

R5-D4 Astromech figure - The Mandalorian (Update 2)

Some really good news!

Saturday, February 3rd, Mike was at an event with R2-TNGO, and messaged me to ask if I had ‘this figure’. The picture he sent me was of R5-D4 from the Mandalorian show! The same figure I was expecting since last year.

Event Report - Megacon Live @ Birmingham - March 2023

Early start on Saturday morning, Mike picked me & R5 up in his van, for the drive up to Birmingham. We arrived in good time, but then had to wait till 8am for our drop off time slot...... not that there was THAT much traffic.

Chris O, our event coordinator, was waiting for us with our wrist bands and where we had to go. We set about unloading Mike's FOUR droids from the van and set them up on our stand area.

We had a good turnout considering that this event is only a week before Celebration Europe! So was glad to attend as the numbers help our case for our own stand area.

As you can see from the photos next, we had a selection of droids, from Star Wars. These included, K-2S0, pit-droid on wheels lol, a Chopper (work in progress), Mike's two static droids, plus his other two mobile ones, one from the Clone Wars & his R3 unit. Steve G attended with his R2, as well as Darren P.
Group picture with almost all the droids, one missing R2 unit, off hiding.

R2-DEWALT & R2-TNG0

We also had Justin with his awesome 3D printed B2EM0
(work in progress) droid.

……and his mini B2EM0

Finally and by no means least, Sarah suited up in her TC-14 suit.
As seen from the Phantom Menace opening scenes.

Myself & Chris were her helpers, guiding her around and ensuring her safety in the crowds,
wanting pictures and there were a lot!! She did 1hr 40mins in total!

After this we toured the area with the droids, chatted with interested new builders, explained things and helped with photos. Myself and Darren also helped a damsel in distress…. her LED wires had broken and asked if we could fix??
After some investigation work we found the problem and managed a temporary fix.

This guy looks familiar….

Yes that is a 1:1’ish ED-209, steampunk droid, built by Chris.

Justin can be seen installing a battery pack for his droid terminal lock.

As with all the events, I had to get some pics of R5 😂
A long day with the event finishing at 6pm!! Then loading the droids into Mike’s van, before heading back home to Bristol.

Alternative ‘colour’ booster covers 2022

Start date: January 2022

This has been another project I’ve been thinking of doing since the Mandalorian session two came out.

Droids are few and far between, but two have been quite prominent, R5-D4 & also NO-AH, first seen in the Jawa’s Sandcrawler. The colour scheme is very unique and I wanted to create this version myself. The dome itself was first seen/used on an A-LT droid for the Solo film. See promo pic below:

The domes are the same size as R2 dome so obviously are able to fit on an Astromech’s body.

A fellow droid builder has offered his large 3D printer to produce a dome when i require it.

Roll on into 2022 & I finally got round to making a start. First bit of research was the release of the Disney Droid Factory toy pack, and Wookieepedia, which gave us his name as ‘N0-AH’.

So I loaded up my 3D drawn boosters that I had previously printed and fit R5’s legs, and printed of the first one whole on my works printer overnight.

Next up was applying wood filler…..and free time.

The Book of Boba Fett: R5-D4

*** SPOILER ALERT!!! ***

The Book of Boba Fett

*** DO NOT SCROLL DOWN ANY FURTHER ***

Sat down to watch Episode 5 of The Book of Boba Fett and was excited (as always) to see R5 in action 😍😍😍😍😍

Flicking between watching the scene and paying close attention to R5.... I was disappointed to notice continuity errors in his appearance 😞😞😞😞😞.

When R5 was re-introduced in The Mandalorian, session 2, there were the usual hype and details noted which could be explained away as 'over time this and that were fixed'. OK, so THIS version is the NEW version, that's cool.

Then in his latest appearance, I noticed a few details and ALL in the one scene!

The above images were captured, in time order in the scene he appears in.

  1. shot, no motivator panel, no rear box red strips.
  2. shot, motivator panel in place, red box strips.
  3. shot, repeat 1st shot.
  4. shot, repeat 2nd shot.
Now, either one of two things:
  • The version with the motivator panel in place [which was seen in the behind the scenes documentary on Disney+] is the REAL remote controlled version.
  • The version with no panel in place is either a repainted version [filmed at a different time] or is CGI.
