Birmingham MCM Comic Con - Saturday 23rd March 2019 - Event Report

(2.4.19)
Early to rise for this one, 6am. Arrived and after the usual gaining an 'unloading ticket pass', unloaded & found the display stand that we would be joining with the other groups.

After the pre-event meeting, where all the groups under the 501st banner, went through the list of things to happen etc throughout the weekend, we returned to the stand to finish setting everything up ready for the event to open.

Lots of work in progress, from 3D printed to wood build and more.

Pre parade photo's. The parade (on the Saturday) started by the groups getting into order and then proceding outside to then re-enter further up the convention centre. We decided that it would be easier for us to drive up on the inside and join the parade as they re-entered the Hall.

These photo's were taken as we waited to join the parade.
 Getting ready to join the parade when they re-entre the Hall.

Us & Amanda, after the parade, about to join the lineup for the group photos.

And here we are in the photo lineup with everyone.
I don't have a picture of us IN the lineup though lol

The rest of the afternoon, was much like the rest of the day, public photos, chatting about the droids and about the group & about our chosen charity, that all the groups associated with the 501st, had kindly supported with collecting for over the weekend.

This charity was for Menigitis Now.

As the day started to draw to a close, I wanted to get a good picture of R5 with his R4 dome on. So swapped them over and here he is.

Another great, fun day spent with everyone. Interacting with the public is great and makes the traveling worth it. I was only able to attend the one day, for the others there was a meal & a groups party on the evening & then day two to look forward too.

But when the event closed its doors, it was time for me to pack up and load the car up.
This now leads me onto my Dome Bag idea, so check that out here.

My next event was a local one, South Bristol's Comic Con,
check out my event report & photos here.

My next event will be over in Cardiff @ Techniquest,
on Saturday May the 4th!

I also forgot about this sticker on my old transmitter box.
Had to get it down to document a modification
I'd carried on to add the hand strap.

The 'Rogue Ones' limited edition print - framed

On my way home the other night, I stopped off at The Range (a UK) store near me and picked up a frame, that a fellow club member had also bought.

Really impressed with this and now it hangs on my wall at home.

The 'Rogue Ones' limited edition print

This amazing limited edition,
Lucasfilm authorised,
print was created by Paul 'Wiz' Johnson.

Each one signed and numbered.
Paul is a bit of a rendering genius, combined images of the droids that he had previously created into this reproduction of the Stormtrooper's wading in the shoreline from the Rogue One trailer images.

Here's a link to Paul's portfolio work over on Artstation

These are only available to members of the R2 Builders club.
They are limited to just 250 prints!

~~~~~
A donation from each print sold goes towards Meningitis Now,
in memory of Joanna,
daughter of a club member how sadly and suddenly succumbed to the infection.
New Centre Leg - Film Version 1.0
After a conversation in a post on astromech.net about R5-D4 and its 'authentic' look. This got me thinking about R5's centre leg. In 'the' scene he is seen rolling away from the Sand crawler when called by Luke, the sharp eyed people noticed that his centre leg, is in fact an outside lower leg section, with only one ankle cylinder!!
R5 is only seen a few times in the film, but due to technical issues there were different units used to film him. Two leg mode, a possible 3 leg static mode and the infamous mobile 3 leg 'bad motivator' mode.
This picture below, you can just make out the centre leg is different.
The following picture was created by club member Paul, based on the above screen image.
Check out more great work of Paul's here on his Twitter account.
So to make R5 as screen accurate as possible, which would be cool, I'll be making a new centre leg, with improved foot location and locking.
