Throw back Thursday - 1

Just posted this up on Instagram, so thought I'd share.

Throw back to my first event attended with R5's.
He was still a work in progress and didn't even have a dome lol.

Dome was brought along and borrowed for R5 by my new fried Ian,
with his R4-1J droid.
The end R6 droid was Mark's from PodPadStudios.

Sci-Fi Fest: 23rd November 2013 @ FLEET AIR ARM museum

Fleet Air Arm Museum
Sci-Fi Fest

~ R5-D4 ~ Along with LOTS of others will be attending this event.

Good news for Sci-fi enthusiasts. Following the popularity of the annual Dalek Invasion, the Museum have announced that a new Sci-fi event will take place on Saturday 23 November. The Sci-fi Fest will appeal to all followers of the Dark Side. An intergalactic call has gone out, and all manner of alien life forms and time lords have agreed to attend including: Storm Troopers, Darth Vader, R2D2, Cybermen, Aliens, Klingons, Ghost Busters, Predators and more.

In addition, there will be family activities involving making your own take home space ship, celebrities, Sci-fi traders, face painting and souvenir photography to add to the occasion.

Organised by the Charity Sci-fi team whose extraordinary exploits have helped raise many thousands of pounds for worthwhile causes, this new family friendly event is on course to be the biggest event of its kind in the South West.

Advance Tickets are available on the Museums’ website, in the Museum Shop during normal Museum opening hours and will be available on the door. Numbers will be restricted.

St. Mary's - Summer Fair 2013

So saturday, R5 made his 1st local (2nd public) event at my children's Summer Fair.

I think I can say that kids thought he was great lol. Even tho some were reminded not to touch, this seemed to fall on deaf ears, good job R5 is pretty sturdy, tho in my absence, when I was being a stormtrooper, my youngest TOLD her school friends, 'hands off he's [R5's] my daddys'! Lol, good girl.

I was surprised at how many dads were interested to know how he was built even one mum did too :) and when I actually had the time to build him! The popular question from everyone was of course, 'does he move?' lol. This will be the next phase of this build, saving funds is now in progress. Then, when the Dad's were told he's made out of wood, i think they were suitably impressed too :D.

He had a few photo's taken with his new school friends [pictures taken by kids parents, not by me].

He came away fairly un-damaged, i knew the utility arms & the 2nd unfinished foot shell [has now lower section] were potential weak points & sure enough the lower Utility arm pivot pin location came loose. Well it was only PVA glued in place and is fixable. The dome gained a few 'battle damage scars'..... in the form of face paint lol but again, nothing that can't be fixed. All in all, id say he stud up to the assault... I mean fair really well :).

The Corsham Sci-fi family fun day 2013

Last month I mentioned that R5 would be making his first debut lol, even though he's not 100% complete. Well, a request for droids was made on the UK R2D2 Builders, Facebook page and so I offered R5's services, in his unfinished state.  :D

So we (and later on, the family) attended
The Corsham Sci-fi family fun day, Saturday  27th April.

With having to be in Corsham for 7:45am, I pre-loaded R5 into the boot the night before and strapped him in good. I then fussed over last minute things I was happy about on him :D lol. So didn't get to bed till midnight.......again.
This was obviously taken the morning before departing :)

The next morning, I was obviously excited, as was awake at 6:15am even before my alarm was due to go off hahaha. After getting ready and putting on my Official R2 Builders Club shirt [chuffed ;)] I set off.

Ian helped wheel R5 in and showed me my new temporary dome, a clear R3 type.
R5 sporting an R3 type dome, just to confuse everyone :)
I fitted the last remaining pieces to R5 before wheeling him into position along side three other quality build Astromechs Arther Astromech Emy & Zoe Astromech. Also a hybrid Dalek Caan & T3:E1,

After the offical opening ceremony, performed by Anthony Stewart Head, R5 was moved onto the platform next to K9.

A fitting tribute was paid to the Charity Sci-Fi's group president, Richard LeParmentier, a force choke by Darth Vader on all the guests, in honour of him. This little piece had become the norm for him at many events and also copied by fans around the world.

Whilst Arther, Emy, Zoe, T3 & Caan, got to roll around the floor and interect with the guests :)

The day finished for the guest around 4pm. Time fly's when your having fun.
Total raised was over £6,800.
This was devided between thress charities & the Actors Benevolent Fund.

R5-D4's Events page

I've added a new page (at top of Blog) which will hopefully have events etc reports of R5's appearances. All being well, it shouldn't be too long before his first appearance :) all be it in an incomplete state lol.
