R5D4 Blog Update.....

It's been a busy few weeks, work & home life. Have only been able to do little bits on R5, been playing with mixtures for the smoke system, looking at how to install it and how to activate it remotely. Also been looking at a sound system to get him 'talking', linking this with the sound/smoke/motivator 'popping up'.

The sound project has sort of come out of the blue as I wasn't planning on fitting sound yet, due to funds, but my recent birthday has changed this :)

So am trying to get all this sorted out in time to hopefully have R5-D4 fully operational this year!!
And maybe even for some of the later events in the year!

Electrical: More components bought 1.1

Just a small update. I've bought some more bits to get R5 up and running.

I've got cable (red & black) 12AWG, connectors to suit, a fuse block, another digital volt meter (these are great lol) this one does 3v-30v range and some XT60 connectors for linking up cables to the batteries.

This lot cost about £20.

More through necessity than real choice, I've tried to keep to a budget for building R5, lol. Since the above post, the largest cost has been the spray paint, even though I started to get the same paint as before from a UK shop called 'The Range' as their cans were almost half the price of 'B&Q' diy store prices.

So, including my recent Radio Transmitter purchase, the total build cost so far is £485.06.

Not bad really, spread out over the build years. Of course it would of been more had I of had to of bought the original wood for the frame and legs (these were off cuts from work).

I still need to buy the Speed Controllers, wires etc.....

R5-D4 build cost so far

Spent a small fortune in B&Q the other night. Five cans of spray paint lol....£25 !!


I'd gone in for grey primer and remembered I also needed white for the main colour. So decided whilst I was there, I might as well pick up a small blue metallic, silver and of course can of clear. Would of got a bigger cans of there three, but they didn't do them (here).
So thought I'd write up about the cost of R5's build so far.


All the wood so far, bar one sheet, I have manage to find. It was left overs and wasn't needed. I had a load of different sized screw's that I've gathered over the years, including some nice long ones left over from a decking project.

• Paint              = £65.29
• Nuts & Bolts   = £23.26
• Extras            = £16.24

Total so far         = £107.79

This I feel is not to bad, considering that I didn't have to buy any major amounts of wood! And also the machined components that I've made have also saved me a LOT of money!! lol
