Social Media for updates and more 2023 -> 2024

April 25th 2023
(updated October 2024)

Its been a while, but R5’s back on Facebook 😁. (2023)

Since Google+ ended, Blog notifications ended and so did the amount of visitors to this site. I do Tweet 😂 and of course have my YouTube channel. No adverts as I’m not here for the money lol, just entertainment/knowledge/help.

So to keep up with what’s happening in R5’s world of Droid Building, I would say you can follow me, like, subscribe, search up 'James R5D4'. And any questions, comments, feel free to post up or DM me if you’d prefer.

Blog views hits 180k plus

It’s always nice to see that people do actually use/see/read my Blog lol.

And today it tripped over the 180k hits!

Monthly figures have been down since Google+ ended 🙁 and I’ve not been on social media much since the beginning of 2020 (no instagram or Facebook), though I have been back on FB recently. Twitter is my only other outlet for letting the outside world know about updates, that and the few astromech forums I’m on.

I do write articles/event reports that as well as my Blog, get uploaded to www.droidbuilders.uk though there’s no link back to my Blog.

Well, there’s more Blog posts to come, future events, 3D printing, droid building etc. so stay up-to date by ‘following’.
So a big thanks to everyone.

Page header image change - R5-D4 (2019)

Trying to simplify things for my accounts, by standardising the images used.
The previous page header was taken back in 2016 at Celebration Europe.

Now going for this simpler design.

James' R5-D4 logo

Also updated Twitter, & Instagram & Facebook pages.

Will be changing this page title to James' R5-D4 at some point in the future,
as long as it doesn't mess links up etc lol

Flashback to LegoLand 2018

This event came up on my time line the other day
and with so many good memories of it,
I thought I'd re-share my event report of the weekend.

It was my second time attending, but this one was my first for staying over for two of the three weekend days. The weather was amazing, sunny & hot. This was definatly up there with the best events (friends) I've experianced.

My R5-D4 designed patches arrived.....

Yesterday afternoon, was a race for time!

The delivery drop-off time was close to when the wife would of not been home, as would of been on school run! I did leave a 'leave in a safe place' note, but still.....

Thankfully, they were delivered in time and here they are.

Blog Title Change......

When I first started writing this blog,
I didn't really know what Title to use,
so called it what it is, 'My R5-D4 Astromech Droid', lol.

Now that I also have a FaceBook page, Twitter & an Instagram account, I thought I should rename this one to better match up with the others.

So am thinking of changing the name to:

James' R5-D4

This, I hope will make finding this age easier as it matches more with the other accounts.

.....just hope this doesn't mess anything up lol.

A Patch for R5-D4 - Final Design

So here is my finished design (still pending manufacture approval lol).

Previous post on designs for a R5-D4 Patch.

As R5's dome is white, I decided to fill it with the iconic scene. It's a bit different to the other designs, but I felt this worked better.

I've posted this up on Astromech.net & Astromech.info (the UK forum, both you have to be signed up on) & also on my Facebook page James' R5-D4.

R5-D4

I have a few more designs for other R5 droids from the films,
which if this is successful I would consider doing as well.

Feel The Force Day 5 - Peterborough 2017

Just reminding you all about this event at the end of this month (here in the UK).

Feel the Force Day, is not just Star Wars, but covers film and theater and loads in between.
There will be costume groups from all over the UK, stalls, activities, sensory areas, famous guests as well as 'film' cars etc. Ive been able to attend the last few years and even as someone attending with a prop, I've had a great time, chatting to people, explaining things about R5. People who maybe visually impaired are able to touch items to better get an understanding of the objects being discribed to them etc, without the usually comments associated with some props..... 'sorry, you can't touch'.

Am looking forward to being part of and helping make this event another great day for attending visitors. R5 will be joining a few other UK R2D2 Builders Club members...........

Pictures from past event days.....

Ill also be trying to post pics on James R5D4 Instagram page if free for two minutes lol, but all pics will be posted up later in my event report and on R5's Facebook page.

December updates......Rogue One

Not posted up for a while, been busy working on and re-working Jessika Pava helmet.

Jessika Pava Helmet
It definitely needed to be smaller, which I posted up a while back, so have been re-working the size, fibreglassing, body fillering, sanding re filling ....repeat. The next plan is to go the cast route which I've been reading up on. You tube to the rescue lol, as i think this would be best. Wouldn't want anything to happen to the helmet and it be damaged.

Due to work issues, internet access has been restricted, and this was the only available free time I could update this blog, it will have to wait now till the new year.

Rogue One
WOW!!! I took the wife and kids to see the film on the Thursday (here in the UK) and we weren't disappointed!! It had everything a 'war' film should have plus it was Star Wars lol.
A lot of people have moaned about changes made, but personally i felt the film flowed and the continuity flowed though out. No spoilers, ill just say I wasn't disappointed and the kids enjoyed it too, which if kids get it, why can't adults ??? Lol.

Friday, was an early start and a long'ish drive to Milton Keynes, to meet up with fellow UK R2 Builders and Joker Squad. We were attending the iMax cinema's Rogue One day. Was great to catch up with everyone and raise cash for charity.
Will add updates and photos in the New Year.

There's another builders group day after Christmas to look forward too as well.

So for now, I'd like to wish everyone who follows this blog & has visited here a happy & Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Lots of good things to look forward to in 2017, so stay positive people :)

Im now on instagram also on Twitter and Facebook lol.

Collectormania 23 Milton Keynes - Event Report

Had a great time on Saturday!

R5 had been loaded up into the rear of the car the night before, so the early morning start was all i had to deal with. Due to changes beyond our builders Group's control, we (the displayee's) only found out that we also had to pay entrance to the event for attending before 11am! After this time entrance is free!

So 5am I was up, and out the door by 5:30am. It wasn't long tho that roadworks and bad weather slowed my journey, so arriving almost an hour later than I'd planned. Then due to parking and the rain, two long walk trips were required to get R5 inside un-wet lol.

Once inside I saw lots of familiar group faces from MK Garrison, Mark and his collection of droids and members of The Joker Squad, before arriving at our club stand. There I found new faces and droids that I've only met on the group forum. Brad, Colin, Mat to name a few. James from X-Robots was there with his BB8 droid & his 3D printed Astromech Droid, check out his VBlog here.

More members of the club arrived to see the droid's and say hi throughout the morning.

Here are the pics...

Due to unforeseen circumstances, R5 was asked if he could 'stand-in' for the other droid that was now not available, for the opening part of a Cosplay best costume competition!
Collectormania 23, UK R2 Builders, R5D4
Here R5 was interviewed about if he was having fun etc lol,
where he replied with beeps & whistles lol. Lasted about 5mins :)

Brad with his R2 unit was interviewed also about the Club.
Collectormania 23 - UK R2 Builders

The crowds were kept entertained by the Droids, kids and grown-up's alike, pictures, videos, selfies lol. Lot's of questions were asked about build materials, costs, time and energy. Hopefully a lot of people were encouraged to join up and start a journey to build their own droid.
The crowds started to thin about about 3/4pm, but this just meant more people could then ask questions and some of the droids could 'play' lol.

We called it a day just before 6pm and we all headed back to our cars to load up droids.
This pic was taken by Colin lol.....
R5D4, Collectormania 23
Then it was a not so long drive home.

Another great day spent doing what we enjoy doing,
bringing a small part of Star Wars to life.

R5-D4 going into storage....Seasons Greetings

Unfortunately myself & R5 won't be able to attend this weekends planned event. So with no further events this year, he'll be getting ready to be stored away till the New Year and be ready for 2015's events.

Got a few things to work on though, dome motorisation, 'Bad Motivator' system, maybe even some sounds?!?!? So a lot of things to keep me busy.

So till then......

Christmas Wishes to you all.

** Collectormania 22 & the UK R2 Builders Club **

R5-D4 astromech droid
Sunday was R5's second motorised event, joining the Uk R2 Builders on the second day at Collectormania 22 @ Milton Keynes (MK Dons football) arena.

Doors open at 9am, so it was an early start for me. I was up at 5:40am and out the door & on the road by 6:00am! R5 was already loaded the night before. Then the two hour plus, drive up to Milton Keynes. Which wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be lol.
R5-D4

Arrived around 8:30am and after a quick re-con, started to unload and assemble R5. There were queuing people out side, some dressed up.
Capitan America
The group were up on the second floor balcony, along with James from XRobots with his 3D printer & also Joker Squad. First floor was the 'computer games' floor, Milton Keynes Garrison & Dr Who show props, costumes & Dareks.

James, in the above picture, was showing visitors 'live' 3D printing of components and explaining the process. Lots of people managed to find us still and were treated to music and dance lol, not from us, but from the droids.

collectormania22

This weekend will only be #R5-D4's second motorised event in as many months!

Once his RC storage box is complete, it's a few more checks to make sure all's ready for him to be loaded up into the car on Saturday evening. I can't make the Saturday, but am really looking forward to Sunday and meeting fellow UK R2 Builders Club members.

I'll try to update R5's own Twitter account, @JamesR5D4
