Solo - A Star Wars Story - Cinema posters

Whilst at Optimus the other week, just before we left, I spotted a stall selling off cinema posters, I thought I'd have a quick look, just on the off chance of any Star Wars ones....

Picked up one The Last Jedi, whic was just the logo, bit basic, but hay.
The other three tho were the UK version's of Solo!

Just need to find a frame for it next.

3D printed Y spliter for smoke system

As something to try out, I drew up and designed a Y- splitter for connecting up more tube that I have for R5's smoke system.

This was my second design after trying to design a more complex one, which wasn't a very good idea lol.

I uploaded it to my Thingiverse account on Friday, just to share. I went on this morning to find it had been viewed 122 times & downloaded 117.

Details can be found via the link above. The single inlet hole was a bit tight, on the second version I printed. As on the first one I forced the tube into the inlet hole, before it had fully cooled, opening up the bore more for the tube.

The idea behind this is to possibly distribute the smoke more out of different area's of R5.

Optimus Comic Con - Bristol (UK) - Saturday 20th October 2018 - Review

For once, not an early start, only 20 minutes to reach into town & to Templemeads Train Station. The Passenger Shed is on the approach incline leading up to the station itself.

We had a change of floor plan on arrival.
We joined two other 'Star Wars' display's in the centre area of the hall. This was better as there was a lot more space for us all.

Early doors opened and the hall filled up with lots of people. There was a lot to see as well as stall's and guests. The droids were in demand with people wanting photos of the and also the Emperors chair, belonging to Carbonite Cosplay Props.

As per usual, getting around at these events is usually limited, due to people wanting to see the droids in one place. We did have a C-3PO standiee & also a Kenny Baker.

These guys came with a Chopper, that was outside having photo's taken.

We lined the droids up as people were wanting group shots, this made things a bit easier too.

Size comparrison of R2-XL & R2-D2.

Paul Warren popped over to see us and had a quick catch-up chat.
I wasn't there at the time, but was told he'd asked to have his picture taken with R5!

Finally we had our photos taken with the Emperors chair.

photo credit goes to DC Photo's for this one, he can be found on Facebook.

Another well attended event, and a plus for it being local lol.
After packing up and loading R5 into the car. I popped back in to have a quick look around whilst everyone was clearing up. I spied a few movie posters that were actually ones displayed in cinemas. So I grabbed a few.
Three picture 'Solo - a Star Wars Story' ones and a plain 'The Last Jedi' one.
Similar to this picture, except mine have the actual release date on them.

Next event is London's MCM Comic Con

MCM London - October 27

This Saturday's event

(link above)

The event's on all weekend, but I'm only able to attend on Saturday.
I'll be joining Sam & Simon with there droids, R2-SHP/LE5 & R2-FETT.
With droid support from Jamie.

Birthday Wishes to my Son

Today marks my Sons 14th Birthday.
He's still as excited about R5 and his adventures as he was when he first asked me 'can you make an R5 Daddy!?!?!' all those years ago.

This is one of the most memorable pictures taken back in 2016 at Celebration Europe. It's an old one, but it checks out!' lol

R5-D4 - 4 years on

Posted up this picture on instagram last night, showing the difference four years on from when R5 was finished being built. When I say finished, of course I just mean fully painted & assembled, as there's always something you can update or improve on.

A lot has happened over those four years, conventions, charity events, club events, Midnight release events, TV apperance plus a few others VERY special moments.

Picture shows, on the left, 2014. Nice white, clean finished droid. On the right, 2018, a four year veteran of events, plus faded paint over time, two lots of applied weathering, plus bumps, knocks, dents, scuffs that have built up over the years of use, just through wear and tear.

There are two builder camps, those who build a clean droid and others who don't lol. I'm definatley in the dirty camp as it adds to the authentic film version people know. I have been asked many times if my R5 is THE R5-D4 seen in the film! Now that is a serious compliment!

Optimus Comic Con - Bristol (UK) - Saturday 20th October 2018

The add's for this event have been popping up on my social timelines and below is the official one showing R5 & R2. Looking forward to attending again with Paul F with his R2-D2 and this year new Club member Mike B will also be attending with his R2-XL.

This images were taken earlier in the year at the last Optimus event.

And here's the add for Mikes R2-XL

All three of us are only able to attend on the Saturday, but will be a good laugh as always.

Feel The Force Day 6 - Peterborough 2018 **Event Report**

Saturday 6th October

As usual R5 was already loaded up ready for an early start, driving up to Peterborough, for the 6th Feel the Force Day.

Arrived after a long drive up in the rain, thankfully access wasn't a distance to worry about with R5 out in the rain. I REALLY do need to get one of Lee's protective covers [update soon]. There were loads of costume/cosplay groups attending and on entering the main hall, I found Adam with his R2-D2 & also there was his Wall-E robot.

If you've not heard of this event (here in the UK) then check out their Website page, Facebook page, You Tube channel, Twitter & Instagram accounts for what they do and what it's all about.

Door's opened at 11am and everyone was glad to get in from the drizzel outside. There were lots of guests, there were stage performances from childrens dance and drama clubs.

R5 & R2 .....and Wall-E got lots of attention and except for Wall-E's head, are both able to take hugs and hands without worrying about possible damage.

I did manage to get some photos, posted already on my Instagram feed & Facebook page.

These are of course Star Wars related, but that was because these people wanted pictures with R5 lol. There were all kinds of costumes from all films & TV shows, young and old.

The event finished up at 6pm, but I had to leave earlier. Today was another great day for Feel the Force and heard so many positive comments about it from people walking around. Good luck for future events.

Littlebits - Star Wars Droid Inventor Kit - pt 5 (2018)

After a few more tweek's, I set up the .stl file for printing. I had originally planned on printing upside down with support, but then went with how I had started printing the first attempt last year. So, the right way up. To save time, I put it in 'fast' mode and 0.3 layer height. Fill at 30%.
Littlebits R5-D4 dome

It didn't take long to dawn on me that perhaps supports would of been a good idea lol, see above picture, but this was a one time print/test so not the end of the world and I can fix bits. At least you know to use supports! I think this may be down to the 0.3 layer height, fast speed & fill, as usually angle edges don't give me any problems.

Then came the 3 main eyes......
Littlebits R5-D4 dome
I had to get in there with the ruler to support the print until it had a few layers on it.

Whist this was printing, I had a few alterations so this .stl & the revised one will both go up on Thingiverse. The alterations include thickening of some of the walls at the bottom, enlarging the two side dome rods and moving them in side the recessed box a bit more, so they are supported. The internal dome roof area has been simplified, single angle face.

Then it was home time. I had to leave it running, and thoughts were that everything else should be ok.....

I came in Monday morning to this.....

No idea what went wrong here???

So I cut off this mess and when I get free time, I'll re-print just the top hat of the dome and glue it on lol.

Littlebits - Star Wars Droid Inventor Kit - pt 4 (2018)

R5-D4 3D print

It's almost a year since I last posted up about creating an R5-D4 dome for the Littlebits astromech. I had done some work since, but as it was still a work in progress so I didn't post anything up. Earlier this year I signed up to www.thingiverse.com to upload some of my work to share. My link is www.thingiverse.com/James_R5D4

This is just a representation of R5's dome, scale is roughly that of the Littlebit's R2 dome. The last print attempt failed, but that was OK, as the bottom ring was used to check the fit of the dome onto the body location ring.

I posted up images yesterday on my Instagram account and after a bit more work this morning, I've almost finished the build.

New rear dome rod
I redid the pie panels, now filled in & also added recessed areas for where the antenna & motivator will fit.

I'll post up again once the last two parts have been drawn up. Not sure if to add these as one piece dome or as three seperate parts (dome, antenna, motivator), for ease of 3D printing orientation.

R5-D4 pin badges 1.0

When I started looking at patch makers,
I found a lot also made pin badges.
My design for R5-D4 stickers

I also looked at getting the design made up,
though the cost is about the same
as the patches for 100 off.

.............this little project will unfortunatley
have to be put on hold for now.
